December 16, 2005: A pencil is sharpened.Florescent lights buzzing over your head. Stuffed in a tight office space with another co-worker. Completely blank, white walls. Clocks that seem to run on 70-second minutes. Being asked to create templates and apply cookie-cutter design to new project after new project. It's a creative's worse nightmare! It has been two years in the desert of Arizona, I've been staring through a comuputer screen slowly hypnotized by the meaningless rhythm of mouse clicks. I have a rumbling in my tummy. Not in anticipation of my lunch break, but because I'm

hungry for concepts, brain-storming, and the chance to let my creativity out of its cage. When the 5:00 whistle blows, I rush home sharpen a new pencil and start laying down an outline of how I believe a design firm should operate, what creativity really is, and what I want to do with my life. First item on the list: "Being creative is making something new and functional, not applying something until it is redundant." I decide that I need more to satisfy my creative itch by looking for freelance work on the side. First, I need to create a brand and an identity. "Hmmm" I wonder as I start scribbling doodles with my pencil, "where to start?" |
